Officer Rescues Toddler in Texas

In a dramatic scene captured on body camera, a police officer in Texas acted swiftly to save a toddler who had stopped breathing after choking. The officer attributed the success of the rescue to his faith, referring to it as a “miracle.”

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when the Southmaid Police Department received an emergency call about a 23-month-old child who was unresponsive and choking. They shared details of the event on their Facebook page.

Upon arrival, Officer Scott Barrett found the little girl unconscious, with blood visible from her mouth and nose. Without any hesitation, he began performing back blows to clear her airway.

“I ran to get her because she seemed to be convulsing,” said the child’s grandmother, Sherry Steward. “She was purple and choking.” Fortunately, Officer Barrett’s intervention allowed the child to resume breathing.

Emergency medical services soon arrived and transported the toddler to Texoma Medical Center for further care. Thankfully, she is expected to recover fully.

After the incident, Police Chief Jeff Laughlin and Lt. Michael Aguirre visited the family, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the prompt actions of the police.

Officer Barrett later reflected on the challenging situation, explaining the complexities of handling such a small child. “You don’t want to hurt them,” he noted, while also sharing that he was praying for guidance during the incident.

Barrett continued to emphasize the role of his faith in the rescue, stating, “Praise God, she started breathing and crying a little.” He reiterated, “It felt like I was just an instrument of something greater.”

He later visited the family again, witnessing the toddler happily playing outside after being released from the hospital. “It was wonderful to see her back to normal,” he remarked, sharing a moment of relief at her recovery.
