See Mazie Hirono Lose Her Composure When Kash Patel Suggests Female FBI Candidates Should Complete a Pull-Up

FBI Director Sparks Tension with Senator Over Fitness Standards

On Tuesday, FBI Director Kash Patel found himself in a heated exchange with Hawaii Senator Mazzy Hirono.

Hirono expressed concerns that the physical requirements, particularly for pull-ups, disproportionately affect women due to inherent physiological differences. Patel responded firmly, stating that if someone aspires to be an agent who chases down criminals, they must meet all fitness standards.

“You’re asking applicants to perform certain pull-ups that many women may struggle with because of these physiological differences. Are these requirements really necessary?” Hirono questioned.

Patel defended the FBI’s physical fitness criteria, emphasizing the need for agents to be capable of physically confronting suspects. “At Quantico’s BTFC, we ensure that agents—who are tasked with carrying firearms and pursuing dangerous individuals—meet the necessary physical fitness evaluations,” he said. “Everyone must pass the 1811 standard. If you want to apprehend criminals, you need to be able to do a pull-up.”

Though Hirono attempted to label the standards as sexist, Patel insisted it was reasonable to require applicants to be able to perform pull-ups.

An interesting update is that many of the FBI’s recruitment requirements, including the necessity for a bachelor’s degree and the length of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, have been relaxed. The training duration has been cut from 18 weeks to just eight weeks.

Starting November 2025, the FBI will mandate that all applicants complete at least one rigorous pull-up as part of their Physical Fitness Test (PFT) to qualify as special agents. The new requirement specifies that an individual’s grip must be outside the shoulder width, and the chin must clear the bar.
