Mayor Involved in Altercation at Council Meeting

A Republican mayor in New Jersey found himself in a tense situation during a township council meeting on Wednesday night, necessitating physical restraint after a heated exchange with a local resident.

The incident unfolded when Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini confronted Michael Sawka, a known critic of his administration, according to reports. Video evidence revealed Sawka gesturing towards the rear of the room, where the mayor’s family was seated, and seemingly giving Bianchini the middle finger.

Shortly after, Bianchini stood up, pointed at Sawka, and moved toward him as bystanders attempted to hold him back. In a moment shared with ABC 7, Bianchini proclaimed, “I’m getting you,” before being escorted out of the meeting space. He later reflected on his behavior, stating, “I just basically snapped. I hate to say it, but it’s been building for a while,” and acknowledged that his remark about confronting Sawka was inappropriate.

Sawka, for his part, was accused of making disrespectful remarks toward the mayor’s wife and daughter during the meeting, allegations which he has denied. Further footage captured Sawka insisting that he wanted police to take action, asserting, “I’m charging him with assault. He came here to threaten me physically, and he just said he’s gonna get me. That’s a threat!”

While Bianchini admitted his conduct was inappropriate, he maintained that, if the situation warranted it, he would respond in the same manner again, emphasizing, “Don’t attack my family. I think any good husband, any good father, would’ve reacted the same.”

The mayor accused Sawka of persistently harassing him and his family, both in person and online. Conversely, Sawka contended that he aimed to expose what he perceived as governmental misuse of funds, alleging that the mayor’s family has targeted him digitally.

Sawka has filed a complaint alleging assault and threats, although authorities have yet to confirm if any charges will follow. Bianchini expressed his belief that Sawka has “been a thorn in this township’s side” for several years.

Additionally, as reported by the New York Post, Bianchini is facing an election this year, with Democrat Belinda Fontanez and Republican Councilman Dan Dewey, who is launching a write-in campaign, as challengers.
