Selma Blair Discusses Her MS Journey at Women’s Health Summit
For a long time, Selma Blair faced unexplained pain and intense fatigue, often feeling overlooked by medical professionals. Her journey to a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) didn’t begin until she was in her 40s, despite having symptoms since childhood.
At the Flow Space Women’s Health Summit, Blair mentioned, “I was diagnosed with a recurrence. In 2018, I found out I had multiple sclerosis. I first experienced optic neuritis at around 7 years old, which indicated I might have early-onset MS. Looking back, I realize there were so many signs I missed along the way.”
Seven Years of Battling MS
Blair stated that she hasn’t had a relapse in seven years of dealing with MS. Reflecting on her past, she recalled enduring painful treatments and multiple hospital visits, all while feeling ignored. “As a kid, I went through CAT scans and hospital stays. I was always so tired and in pain, yet the doctors brushed off my symptoms. My mom questioned why I wasn’t getting an MRI,” she shared.
She also pointed out an incident where a male classmate received immediate MRI scans for a headache, while her own persistent symptoms were minimized because they deemed her issues as typical growing pains. “It’s frustrating to think about. It’s not that they were wrong to help him; it’s just that I was dismissed,” she explained.
Documentary and Community Connection
Blair’s diagnosis finally clarified those years filled with symptoms that had been misattributed. By sharing her experiences publicly, she has found solace and kinship among others facing chronic illnesses. “When I began posting online, I discovered a community that resonated with my struggles. It was comforting to know I wasn’t alone, especially at a time when resources for MS were limited,” she said. “I continue to learn and grow with this condition. It feels great to give comfort to others.”
Though sometimes she still battles issues with movement and speech, she mentioned that working with supportive people on set has helped her immensely. “I even expressed my gratitude to them on Instagram. But the struggle is still part of the journey,” she reflected.
Despite her challenges, Blair has experienced significant improvements in her health recently. “I feel fantastic. This past year has really shown me what recovery looks like. My stamina is better, and going out now feels less daunting,” she added.
