Sen. Bernie Moreno Criticizes Dr. Anthony Fauci in Congressional Hearing

During a Congressional hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) expressed strong criticism towards Dr. Anthony Fauci, who was a prominent medical adviser under Presidents Trump and Biden during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreno’s remarks included a notable expletive and underscored his frustration with Fauci’s actions and their repercussions on the public.

Dr. Fauci was called to testify following a subpoena from Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, amid an ongoing investigation concerning the origins of COVID-19 and the government’s response. Paul, chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, has long accused Fauci of providing misleading information regarding the virus, the funding related to research at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, and the specifics around gain-of-function research.

Moreno asked Fauci, “Who the hell do you think you are to do that?” further labeling Fauci’s impact on the country as “an absolute disgrace.” He pointed to the government’s pandemic guidelines—like mask mandates and school closures—as harmful to the American public. He recounted the story of an Ohio mother arrested for not wearing a mask at a football game, describing the actions of politicians following Fauci’s advice as “stupid.”

Reflecting on his motivations, Moreno shared that he made a life-changing decision nearly six years ago to transition from business to public service, running for the Senate because he could no longer “stand by.” As tensions rose, he pressed Fauci to apologize to the American public, a request that led Fauci to repeatedly invoke the Fifth Amendment throughout the hearing.

Moreno started his session by inviting audience members who felt wronged by the government’s measures to stand. As several did, he asked Fauci to acknowledge them, but Fauci refrained from turning around. Moreno went so far as to accuse Fauci of prioritizing celebrity interactions, referencing a Zoom call that Fauci attended with Kim Kardashian and other public figures, suggesting he was not fulfilling his duties as a public health official.

This confrontation sparked notable reactions on social media, particularly among conservative commentators. One contributor argued that Fauci should face jail time, while White House communications director Stephen Chan praised Moreno’s approach as vigorous.

In the wake of the hearing, Jace Yarbrough, a Republican Congressional candidate from Texas and Air Force veteran, thanked Moreno, expressing that his actions underscore the struggles of military personnel who declined the COVID-19 vaccine. Yarbrough noted that many faced significant consequences, such as job loss and disciplinary actions, for their choices.

Moreno’s chief of staff also expressed admiration for the exchange, emphasizing its uniqueness in the congressional arena.

In response to the unfolding events, Fauci’s attorney remarked in an email that Moreno’s criticisms were entirely inaccurate.
