Sen. Sanders Urges AI Companies to Pause Development

Senator Bernie Sanders has expressed serious concerns to leaders at Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI, urging them to suspend their artificial intelligence (AI) development efforts. He warns that failure to do so may lead to intervention from Congress.

In a letter sent on Monday, Sanders stated, “Mr. [Sam] Altman, [Dario] Mr. Amodei, and Mr. [Mark] Zuckerberg: For the good of humanity, keep your word. Pause AI development. It is not too late to avoid disaster.” He adds a warning that if these companies don’t act responsibly, he and other Senators may step in.

Sanders, who is 84 years old, has been wary of AI technology for some time. He referenced prior assurances from these companies that they would halt progress if their systems posed safety risks. Recently, all three companies have faced issues related to fraudulent AI models.

He expressed his worries further, saying, “At a time when we are witnessing humans losing control and potentially creating dangerous viruses, your company is still rushing ahead, pouring billions into tech that remains largely beyond comprehension or control.”

This isn’t the first time Sanders has raised alarms about AI. Earlier this year, he suggested that cooperation with nations like China might be necessary to manage the threats posed by this “runaway train.” There are fears that AI development could enhance national security risks, particularly regarding China’s technological ambitions.

China, for instance, employs AI to maintain a vast surveillance system over its citizens. Many experts are apprehensive that if China excels in AI, it could acquire extensive data about individuals in Western countries.

Additionally, Sanders has notable worries about AI’s implications for employment, particularly as automation becomes more prevalent. A recent pause was called for in building new data centers intended for processing the latest AI models.

Despite Sanders’ strong advocacy, there has been little progress on this front. However, the upcoming midterm elections could shift the balance of power, allowing Democrats to possibly initiate inquiries into tech firms if they gain control in Congress.

So far, representatives from Meta and Anthropic have not commented on Sanders’ letter. Interestingly, OpenAI announced late last week that it would delay its Astra model’s release due to the concerns raised by Sanders.
