Sen. Darling Graham Remembers Late Brother Lindsey Graham
Sen. Darling Graham addressed the Senate Budget Committee, paying tribute to her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, who recently passed away at 71.
In her remarks, Darling highlighted Lindsey’s immense work ethic, suggesting that his busy schedule may have played a role in his untimely death.
“He worked harder than anyone I’ve ever known, and I’m not just saying that because he’s my brother,” Darling remarked.
She also mentioned her concerns for him, noting that she had urged him to take things a bit easier, fearing that his nonstop pace would take a toll on his health.
“I begged him to slow down. I knew it wasn’t good, and I was already praying and knew in my heart that something was going to happen at some point,” she shared.
Darling found some solace in the fact that he passed while doing what he loved: serving the people of South Carolina and the country. Yes, he was dedicated, perhaps to a fault.
Lindsey died on July 11 after a brief illness following an overseas trip. The D.C. Medical Examiner’s initial findings cite “aortic dissection” linked to “arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease” as the cause of death.
Following his passing, Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darling to fulfill her brother’s remaining term. Additionally, Sen. Ron Johnson stepped in as the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
“Lindsey confided in me that it took a toll on his personal life and his health… He gave his life to this country, and I think ultimately he gave his life for this country,” Johnson remarked, suggesting that Lindsey’s final trips to Turkey and Ukraine contributed to his health struggles.
During Wednesday’s meeting, senators from both parties reflected on Lindsey’s service and contributions, praising his wit and ability to collaborate with those who held different opinions.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse stated, “We’re a much darker and stupider place without Lindsey Graham.”
Despite her loss, Darling expressed hope, asserting that her brother’s legacy will continue to resonate.
