Hawley Accuses Jack Smith of Spying on GOP Senators
Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri has sharply criticized special adviser Jack Smith, claiming he is engaged in “spying on his political opponents” during the January 6 investigation. Hawley labeled this alleged surveillance “an abuse of power beyond Watergate.”
According to reports, the FBI, operating under Smith’s supervision, has gathered call logs and metadata linked to nearly a dozen GOP senators, including Hawley, as part of its inquiry into the Capitol riots. The information obtained included records of calls and timestamps but did not capture the actual conversation content.
Speaking to Fox News Digital on Monday, Hawley shared that the recent documents imply that the Biden administration is “spying on the president’s political adversaries.” He believes this incident is part of a larger trend of government overreach under Biden’s administration, referencing concerns about oversight in the Catholic Church, monitoring of school board meetings, and social media censorship.
Hawley, who confronted Democrats for their vocal criticisms following an ICE-related incident involving a border patrol facility, reiterated that this activity appears to be a systematic approach to suppress dissent.
“The truth comes out,” he remarked. “Biden’s operatives, who claim to be safeguarding ‘our sacred democracy,’ are, in fact, undermining it—all for the sake of power.” He further asserted that this reflects a severe abuse of authority that surpasses even historical instances of governmental misconduct, specifically referencing Watergate and J. Edgar Hoover’s tactics. “A thorough investigation is essential. We need to identify who sanctioned this and hold them accountable,” he stated.
Hawley suggested that his targeting stems from his status as a conservative Republican who has openly denounced Biden’s policies. He described the nature of the surveillance as surpassing even what was observed during Watergate, indicating that governmental agencies like the FBI, DOJ, and DHS are being misused to silence critics and scrutinize ordinary citizens.
He characterized the approach as “clearly partisan” and cautioned that such behavior poses a significant threat to national integrity.
In concluding remarks, Hawley demanded full accountability and transparency, arguing that misuse of power for political vendettas must be decisively addressed. He pointedly asserted that the government’s actions should be subjected to scrutiny under constitutional frameworks to prevent abuse.
