Trump Pressures Senate Republicans on Filibuster

President Donald Trump is pushing Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, during an appearance on Fox News Radio’s “The Guy Benson Show,” indicated that there aren’t enough votes to scrap the 60-vote requirement.

Even though Republicans hold a majority, the filibuster acts as a safeguard against the majority party’s power, ensuring specific standards are met to progress legislation. Thune believes only about 10 to 12 out of the 53 Republican senators would support abolishing it.

Senate Republicans Plan Funding Bill Amid Government Shutdown

Thune described the filibuster as an essential tool for Republicans when they were a minority, recalling how they blocked numerous Democratic policies last year due to this threshold. He warned that if Democrats regain the majority, they might remove the filibuster and cautioned that if Republicans “handle their own dirty work,” they would be responsible for future adverse actions from Democrats.

Trump’s Calls to End Filibuster Amid Ongoing Shutdown

Trump is urging Republicans to stop what he terms their “procedural onslaught.” He asserted that maintaining the filibuster gives Democrats a better shot at succeeding in upcoming elections, claiming that Republicans would struggle to implement reasonable policies as the Democrats could obstruct with votes. He expressed concern that nothing could progress for three years, potentially jeopardizing midterm elections.

Senate Resumes Activity During History’s Longest Government Shutdown

Trump further entreats, “Let’s end the filibuster now, conclude this unnecessary government shutdown, and implement the Republican policies we’ve been longing for. We can be the party that wins and is wise.” His declarations reflect a sense of urgency and frustration over the current political gridlock.
