Sen. Joni Ernst Reveals She Will Not Run for Reelection in 2026

Senator Joni Ernst Announces Decision Not to Seek Reelection in 2026

In a video message on Tuesday, Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) announced she will not run for another term in 2026, marking the end of her time in the Senate after over a decade. Her public service career, which includes roles in the US Army Reserves and the Iowa Army National Guard, as well as various election offices, is coming to a close.

“Being a US Senator is a lifelong privilege,” Ernst stated. “As my family grows, it’s time for me to give back to them. After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided I will not seek reelection in 2026.”

Ernst, originally from Red Oak, Iowa, previously served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard and was involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom. After her tenure on the family farm, she worked as Montgomery County Auditor, went on to serve in the state senate, and was elected to the US Senate in 2014.

She expressed pride in her legislative record, highlighting her initiatives to cut government waste, protect unborn children, bolster the military, and support Iowa farmers and small businesses. “This chapter of my elected service will soon end, but I’ll keep finding ways to serve my community, my state, and our great nation,” she remarked.

Leaders within Iowa’s Republican party and her national colleagues have praised her contributions. Iowa GOP Chair Jeff Kaufman commended Ernst for her efforts to eliminate waste and protect the interests of Iowa’s farmers and small businesses. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) labeled her a “great senator, a patriot, a trusted friend,” while Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called her “one of our country’s most effective voices for a strong military and foreign policy.”

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) referred to Ernst’s journey as a “strong example of the American Dream” and mentioned plans to announce their continued support for Iowa and President Trump’s agenda in the Senate soon. Iowa Attorney General Brennabbard recognized her as a relentless advocate for protecting the unborn and strengthening national security, while Mariannett Miller Meek (R-IA) expressed gratitude for Ernst’s friendship and leadership.

During her time in the Senate, Ernst focused on exposing waste and fraud in government, embodying her “Making Washington Work” campaign, and also founded the Government Efficiency Caucus. She advocated for laws like Sarah’s Act and the Laken Riley Act, aimed at detaining illegal immigrants charged with serious offenses. Furthermore, she aimed to cut billions from federal projects that she criticized as unnecessary, such as California’s high-speed rail.

Her oversight efforts extended to scrutinizing coronavirus aid fraud and government credit card abuses. Last August, she called for reclaiming $14 billion from stalled and excessive rail projects.

Elected for the first time in 2014, Ernst made history as Iowa’s first female combat veteran to serve in the Senate. After being re-elected in 2020, she will finish her second term in January 2027.
