Sen. Josh Hawley challenges MLB's 'liberal beliefs'

Senator Josh Hawley is seeking clarification from Major League Baseball after the league issued warnings to a few San Francisco Giants pitchers for inscribing Bible verses on their caps during the team’s Pride Night event.

In a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, Hawley expressed concerns over what he termed a “clear pattern of discriminating against Christians” while favoring left-leaning ideologies.

The Missouri senator highlighted the warnings issued to Giants pitchers Landen Roop, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker, who included references to Genesis 9 on their rainbow-themed caps during last week’s game at Oracle Park.

Hawley argued that while MLB has embraced social justice messaging in the past—like during the 2020 season—the league seemed to enforce rules when the players referenced Biblical text. He pointed out that the league has essentially crafted specific speech while penalizing others.

In response, MLB stated that the warning was not about the content but rather a standard enforcement of its uniform policy, which does not allow additional text or messages on uniforms. They clarified that such verbal warnings have been issued before for various personal messages, including family notes.

The situation has drawn reactions from several well-known conservatives. Vice President J.D. Vance took to social media to criticize the league, while comedian Rob Schneider labeled MLB as “anti-Christian,” even offering to cover fines for players who display Bible verses on their uniforms.

Hawley has requested that MLB reply by June 19 with documentation concerning its uniform policy, disciplinary actions, and guidelines on religious expression related to players. The warning came during the Giants’ annual Pride Night, aimed at celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, which is a significant part of the franchise’s advocacy efforts.
