Sen. Mark Kelly Addresses Democratic Messaging Issues

Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona acknowledged on Sunday that the Democratic Party is facing challenges with its messaging. He stressed the importance of improving communication, stating, “We need to fix this; we don’t typically have significant stockpiles of votes, especially this far from an election. Still, we clearly have a messaging issue,” during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tupper.

A recent Wall Street Journal poll revealed that only 63% of respondents reported favorable views of the Democrats. This represents the highest unfavorable rating the party has received since 1990.

“It’s crucial to connect with voters and discuss the topics that matter to them,” Kelly emphasized.

Kelly mentioned engaging with Americans from various states, sharing insights about how legislation impacts daily lives. He recalled a moment when he and his wife, Gabby, posed questions to a large group in an effort to clarify issues surrounding Medicaid and food aid, seeking to emphasize their direct effects on families. “They were responding, saying, ‘We get that,’” he noted.

According to the same poll, merely 33% of registered voters view Democrats positively. Tupper also brought up an official Democratic social media post that aimed to illustrate rising grocery prices from 2019 through 2025, asserting that “US food prices reached record highs in 2025, exceeding those of July 2024.”

However, many users of the platform pointed out that the spike in prices actually began in 2021 under Biden’s administration, predicting that they might stabilize only after 2024, coinciding with a potential second term for Donald Trump.

When asked about the Democrats’ communication issues regarding inflation—a concern widely noted during Biden’s presidency—Kelly conceded, “Yeah, that’s true. Inflation was present during the Biden years. I’ve been monitoring this closely.” He acknowledged spikes in prices for basic goods like eggs and ground beef during that time, while also cautioning about the implications of Trump’s tariff policies.

“The reality is, Americans need to understand that Trump’s tariffs could raise costs, affecting the entire supply chain,” Kelly pointed out, also noting the rising unemployment rates in Arizona.
