Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra this week declined to support any restrictions on abortion.
During the Senate Appropriations Committee Tuesday’s hearingSen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) asked Becerra a simple question: “Do you support abortion of healthy fetuses up to the moment of birth?”
“Let’s assume it’s the day before your due date and the baby is fully formed and both baby and mother are healthy. Would you then support the right to abort the baby?” Kennedy asked. Asked.
But instead of answering questions, Becerra insisted that no one was promoting late-term abortions. Republican senators responded by quoting Becerra himself. From the press release at the time Attorney General of California. “No government, state or federal, has the right to make decisions about a woman’s body or health care,” Becerra said at the time.
President Kennedy said, “Your words, not mine.”
“That’s a nice word,” Becerra said jokingly.
“Let me ask you again: If the mother is healthy and the baby is healthy up until the moment it is born, do you think you have the right to abort that baby up until the moment it is born?” Kennedy followed up.
“I have always supported Roe vs. WadeThat doesn’t implement what you just said,” Becerra responded. The right to consult a doctor and decide what to do. ”
For the next few minutes, Kennedy and Becerra engaged in a back-and-forth argument over his refusal to give a direct answer.
Mr. Kennedy refined his question, asking Mr. Becerra whether he supported restricting late-term abortions, but Mr. Becerra repeatedly dodged the question. Becerra said only that she trusts women to make their own decisions, while egg.
“Why are you embarrassed to answer?” Kennedy finally asked. “Why are you afraid to answer questions?”
Mr. Becerra denied being embarrassed or scared, but never answered Mr. Kennedy’s questions. It was clear that the chief did not want to publicly say he supported it. Any Restrictions on abortion, even if it means appearing to support late-term abortions.
“You’re dodging and weaving and flipping like a crazy catfish,” Kennedy observed.
For the record, Mr. Becerra never provided any substantive answers to Mr. Kennedy’s questions, where a simple “yes” or “no” would have sufficed.
