Senator Kennedy Urges Focus on Cost-of-Living Issues Ahead of 2026 Elections
Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy is advocating for President Donald Trump to shift his attention to cost-of-living challenges as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
During his appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Kennedy emphasized that the rising costs of housing, healthcare, and energy are pressing concerns for voters as they prepare to head to the polls in November.
He called on the White House and Congressional Republicans to focus on concrete legislation that could alleviate household expenses rather than becoming sidetracked by partisan issues.
Kennedy also touched upon international concerns, urging President Trump to directly communicate the administration’s strategy regarding ongoing tensions with Iran. He noted that regional instability and blockades near the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to increased global oil and domestic gasoline prices.
While he reiterated his stance against sending ground troops, Kennedy stated that the public deserves a transparent narrative and a clear action plan from the White House on resolving these conflicts to help stabilize energy markets.
The senator asserted that Republicans must prioritize policies aimed at boosting affordability to retain and grow their congressional majorities. He believes that directly addressing household expenses is vital for the Trump administration to protect its platform before November.
“Iran made a recent offer to the president, but it wasn’t serious. He turned it down. We need to stick with our current approach—sanctions and blockades. The truth is, Iran is a liability, and the world is safer for it,” Kennedy said. “The situation in the Strait is partially closed, impacting oil prices, which affects everything, including gas prices. It’s painful. We need to either find a way to open the strait or escalate, but I wouldn’t want to send in troops since that would lead to a slew of new problems.
“This isn’t advanced calculus. I’ve visited many battleground states and learned something important: when parents lay down to sleep, they’re not worried about trivial things; they’re anxious about the cost of living,” he continued.
“They also have concerns about Iran, even if they don’t fully understand it, because they see a link between the two issues. We need to have an honest conversation about these matters. My prediction for the midterms? Experts will be wrong, as they often are. Campaigning isn’t their forte. It’s going to be close. It would really benefit the president to concentrate on cost of living, and I’d like to see him give a nationwide address.”
