Graham Criticizes Sanctuary Cities, Trump Pushes New Policies
Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican, has expressed strong disapproval of sanctuary cities, referring to them as areas that promote “massive fraud.” He indicated that President Donald Trump is devising a plan to abolish these sanctuary city policies.
During a talk with Sean Hannity, Graham mentioned that he had a conversation with Trump about working with Minneapolis officials to address the unrest against ICE operations in Minnesota. However, he emphasized that the president will not compromise on the issue of sanctuary cities. “What Donald Trump won’t do is avoid addressing sanctuary cities,” Graham stated, adding that the president, alongside himself and other senators, is working on legislation aimed at permanently repealing these policies.
Graham issued a warning to the 12 states implementing such policies, saying they would face consequences if they did not change their stance. He pointed out that “sanctuary city policies can never maintain law and order.”
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump called for Congress to enact laws that would eliminate the sanctuary jurisdiction policy, which comes amid rising tensions between federal authorities and local leaders in Minnesota over a confrontation involving ICE agents and protesters. This tension escalated following the fatal shooting of a resident, Alex Preti, by federal agents, making him the second Minneapolis resident killed in such incidents this year.
The conflict has prompted a shift in the administration’s stance on immigration enforcement in Minnesota. After criticism surrounding Preti’s death, Trump reinstated Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino and sent in Tom Homan, referred to as the “border czar.”
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota had a constructive conversation with Trump about addressing anti-ICE protests. Homan has since traveled to Minnesota to engage with both Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who has been resistant to enforcing federal immigration laws as urged by the Trump administration.
Despite some progress, tensions remain evident. Graham criticized sanctuary cities, suggesting they are essentially an “invitation to massive fraud” and lead to a disregard for essential laws meant to protect the public. As Democrats in the Senate press for funding cuts and reform related to ICE, the situation appears to be ongoing and complex.
