Senator Mitch McConnell Struggles with Health Issues

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) experienced another fall on Thursday in Washington, D.C., amid ongoing health concerns as his long political career nears its end.

At 83, McConnell was walking through the basement of the Russell Building when members of the Sunrise Movement questioned him. In a video from the incident, he was seen initially holding onto another person’s arm, but he soon let go and walked alone. A member of the group asked him, “Do you support ICE taking workers off the streets and kidnapping them?”

As she was finishing her question, McConnell inadvertently pulled the individual beside him down to the floor. Fortunately, he received help getting back up, and then waved at nearby cameras before slowly walking away, flanked by two men. Remarkably, he managed to leave the scene on his own.

This incident isn’t the first time McConnell has been recorded appearing to struggle physically. Last December, he faced a fall during a Senate Republican Conference lunch, resulting in cuts on his face that required treatment. Following that, his spokesperson revealed he was working from home due to “stiffness” in his leg.

Past reports indicate that McConnell suffered a concussion earlier in 2023 after a fall at a hotel in Washington, D.C. That particular incident was just one of several falls he experienced throughout the year. In February 2025, another fall occurred, this time down the stairs outside the Senate chamber, although he managed to recover quickly.

These recent incidents have raised concerns about McConnell’s ability to lead, especially after moments where he seemed frozen when speaking to reporters. Back in August 2023, he reacted to a question about seeking re-election in 2026 with laughter, but then fell silent and appeared to struggle with his posture, leaving some questions regarding his future in leadership.

In light of his health issues, McConnell has since stepped down from his role in Republican leadership and confirmed that he will not be seeking re-election.
