Senator Murkowski Backs Democratic Candidate for Alaska Governor
Lisa Murkowski, the U.S. Senator from Alaska and a nominal Republican who plans to run for re-election in 2028, seems to consistently challenge the MAGA agenda while undercutting her Republican peers.
Her recent actions are no exception to this pattern.
‘You just don’t get any worse!’
Instead of supporting one of the three Republican candidates vying for the governorship in Alaska, the 69-year-old senator has decided to endorse former Alaska state Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins.
Kreiss-Tomkins is a Democrat who has received endorsement from Planned Parenthood Alliance and is recognized for being “a proven advocate for reproductive health and LGBTQ2S+ rights.”
Murkowski stated in a campaign announcement on Tuesday, “Our future is too important to be hamstrung by partisan divisions. Jonathan understands that governing requires listening to people with different perspectives and finding common ground to solve the problems all of us face.”
She also described Kreiss-Tomkins as “committed to working toward solutions that serve all Alaskans,” asserting that he would “put our state first.”
Kreiss-Tomkins responded by expressing appreciation for Murkowski’s endorsement, stating, “Alaskans deserve a government that can work through disagreements and make progress on the issues that matter.”
Attempts to reach the campaigns of Republican gubernatorial candidates Dave Bronson, Treg Taylor, and Bernadette Wilson for comments went unanswered. However, Taylor voiced his disappointment on Facebook, labeling Murkowski’s choice as “particularly disappointing.”
The Cook Political Report indicated on October 13 that the gubernatorial race is leaning Democratic.
Murkowski has previously criticized current Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy, sharing with KTUU-TV that she has “found fault” with him.
“I think that they have left federal money on the table,” she stated. “I think in certain areas, where we have worked hard to put opportunities from the federal side, here, into the state, the state has failed with it.”
This isn’t the first time Murkowski has endorsed a Democrat with controversial views.
In October 2024, she publicly supported the re-election bid of Mary Peltola, a pro-abortion Democrat who voted against legislation barring males from participating in girls’ sports. Peltola, currently running for the U.S. Senate, also received support from Murkowski earlier this year following allegations of misconduct.
Murkowski’s record shows she has often obstructed Republican initiatives, recently opposing the confirmation of Attorney General Todd Blanche and voting against various funding measures for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She’s also expressed dissent on crucial issues regarding President Trump’s policies, including tariffs and military nominees.
This latest endorsement comes just days after Trump labeled her as “Republicans’ Worst Senator” and a “DISGRACE to Alaska and our Country.”
