Sen. Murphy Criticizes Trump’s Actions Amid Gun Violence Concerns

Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut has accused President Donald Trump of leading a “dizzying campaign to increase violence” in the United States. He expressed concerns that Trump is “deliberately restoring gun rights to dangerous people” while also cutting off vital mental health resources aimed at reducing gun violence. Murphy characterized this as “a pretty deliberate campaign to try to make violence more likely in this country.”

During a conversation with CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday’s “State of the Nation,” Murphy discussed the mass shooting that occurred this weekend at Brown University and touched on the larger issue of gun violence in America.

He pointed out, “What we know is that stronger gun laws work.” Since the passing of a new law in 2022—marking the first major federal gun legislation in three decades—Murphy noted a decline in both gun violence and mass shooting incidents. However, he emphasized that Trump’s actions are counterproductive, pointing out that the president has been actively working to restore gun rights to those previously prohibited from owning firearms.

Murphy also claimed that Trump’s administration is slashing funding for various “gun violence prevention programs,” many of which were established under President Biden’s Bipartisan Safe Communities Act from 2022. According to Murphy, these steps demonstrate Trump’s intent to incite further violence.

“He’s been running a pretty deliberate campaign to make violence more likely in this country,” Murphy reiterated, expressing concern that these actions would soon have visible consequences on America’s streets.

When Bash challenged Murphy’s comments, stating, “That’s a pretty serious statement. He’s campaigning to increase the likelihood of violence,” the senator affirmed his belief. “Absolutely. In other words, he is intentionally restoring gun rights to dangerous people while cutting funding for programs that could help alleviate this situation,” he said. He further argued that reducing funding for mental health services and local anti-gun violence initiatives leads to a predictable increase in violence.

In response, White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson suggested that Murphy should reflect on his own statements. She accused him and his colleagues of inciting violence themselves by using inflammatory language against political opponents, referencing comments made about ICE agents.

“Assaults against ICE agents have skyrocketed, leading to tragic incidents,” she stated, adding that the violent left remains a pressing issue, whether Murphy acknowledges it or not.

Tragically, at Brown University, two students lost their lives and nine others were injured in the shooting that took place Saturday afternoon inside a classroom in the Barth and Hawley School of Engineering. Police have since arrested a man in his 30s, although further details on this individual have not been disclosed.
