California Senator Alex Padilla is expressing his hope that others will share the anger he felt after being removed from a press conference led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles. Video footage captured the moment Padilla approached Noem while she was speaking, attempting to yell at her, only to be stopped by law enforcement.
Ultimately, Padilla was brought to the ground and handcuffed, as shown in the footage. Following the incident, he spoke emotionally to reporters, sharing that while everything turned out okay, he wants people to recognize the underlying “anger” of the situation.
He commented during an interview with MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff that it’s essential for folks to grasp how he felt. Padilla remarked that if something like this could happen just for trying to ask Noem questions, it raises significant concerns about treatment in the country during this administration—not just recently, but extending back.
Padilla also pointed out that he felt dismissed by Noem, describing her response as lacking substance. He confirmed that she was not forthcoming with answers to the questions he raised. “You would think she might start with an apology, but of course not,” he mused.
The White House, in a statement to Fox News, criticized Padilla, suggesting he aimed for attention rather than genuine answers. They described his approach as juvenile, calling it an example of a “Theatre Kid Stunt.” The statement suggested Padilla caused embarrassment to himself and his constituents by prioritizing theatrics over substantive dialogue about pressing issues, like the violence and unrest in Los Angeles.
