Sen. Raphael Warnock Discusses Christian Leaders and Trump

Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia recently drew a provocative comparison during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper. He likened Christian leaders endorsing President Donald Trump to those who historically justified slavery in the U.S.

In the interview aired on Sunday, Warnock reflected on how his Christian faith informs his political views. He mentioned that, while he prays for the president, he does not support his administration, which he described as “ungodly.” Tapper brought up the idea that some pastors believe Trump was appointed by God, which led Warnock to express his disapproval.

“Oh, they’re wrong,” he said, making the comparison to religious figures who misused the Bible to advocate for slavery. “In America, some Christians thought slavery was divinely sanctioned and used scripture to support that stance,” he continued. “I’m part of a tradition that fights for freedom, one that acknowledges God made us to be free, not slaves. That’s how the Black church emerged.” He underscored the role of the Black church in addressing the misinterpretation of faith in the context of slavery.

While discussing Trump, Warnock stated that the president requires “a lot of prayer.” He voiced concern over the apparent brutality associated with the Trump administration, particularly through the policies of ICE, describing them as driven by “unabashed, raw bigotry.” He emphasized the need for both prayer and accountability in speaking out against such injustices.

Tapper pressed Warnock on how he navigates conversations with conservative members of his church, particularly on contentious issues like immigration and abortion. Warnock acknowledged the diversity of opinions within his congregation, affirming, “We’re Baptists,” while stressing the importance of grace and understanding in these discussions. He suggested that now, more than ever, a little compassion and reprieve could go a long way.

In response to the interview, White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers expressed that President Trump has prioritized religious freedom, highlighting accomplishments in protecting the rights of faith-based communities.
