Controversy Surrounds Senator Ruben Gallego

WASHINGTON – Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona and a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, has been linked to sexual relationships with at least two staff members from the House. His tendency to be “very flirtatious” with others may also lead to further complications in the future.

The 46-year-old congressman acknowledged two consensual relationships with aides from the Texas Democratic Party, while another source mentioned he recently found out about these entanglements. An additional source claimed that one of the incidents happened during his decade-long tenure representing Phoenix in the House.

Some observers pointed to these relationships as part of a larger pattern of questionable decisions, underscoring the power dynamics at play between elected officials and their staff. They noted that one of the women involved was significantly younger than Gallego, being in her 20s at the time.

“What else could be out there?” one source inquired, reflecting on the situation.

In a recent development, the Senate Ethics Committee dismissed a complaint against Gallego filed by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) related to campaign finance violations and sexual misconduct. The committee, led by Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), may not have inquired about Gallego’s relationships with staff, focusing instead on the specific allegations presented by Luna.

According to an insider, “Ethics was in the wrong place” concerning the investigation’s focus.

Gallego’s office, along with two House officials, did not comment on inquiries regarding the relationships, which are believed to have occurred while he was unmarried.

After the resignation of Gallego’s friend Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) in April, speculation surrounding Gallego’s personal life grew. Multiple women reportedly accused him of sexual harassment and assault, although Gallego claims he was unaware of Swalwell’s alleged misconduct.

Luna mentioned her allegations during a CBS News interview, revealing a woman was prepared to press charges concerning an incident involving both Gallego and Swalwell. On social media, she asserted that she had heard of four women experiencing unwanted advances from Gallego on several occasions.

In response to the Ethics Commission’s dismissal of Luna’s complaint, Gallego characterized it as a “right-wing conspiracy” orchestrated by Luna and her allies.

Despite existing Congressional rules that typically allow relationships between lawmakers and their staff, ongoing controversies are prompting discussions about possibly banning such relationships altogether.

An internal inquiry might shed more light on the situation. Reports surfaced about Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) engaging in questionable behavior with a staff member at a party, raising further concerns among Gallego’s cohort.

Gomez publicly admitted to infidelity after allegations emerged, which led to the Ethics Committee discovering more instances of sexual misconduct involving him.

A Democratic operative familiar with Gallego expressed that the revelations were “not surprising,” recalling instances of Gallego’s flirtatious behavior. “He makes others uncomfortable. I’ve always tried to steer clear of him,” she stated.

Gallego married his second wife, Sydney, in June 2021, having filed for divorce from his first wife, Katie, just before Christmas in 2016 while she was nine months pregnant.

In addition to his personal troubles, Gallego is also facing scrutiny from the Justice Department over accusations of misusing campaign funds for personal trips, alleging that he is being politically targeted.

Notwithstanding the ongoing controversies, one Democratic source emphasized that Gallego still harbors ambitions for the presidency, albeit recognizing the increasing challenges he faces.

“He wants to do it, but it’s becoming more complicated,” the source observed. “Addressing his behavior may be essential to that goal, but it seems unlikely at this point.”
