Sen. Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, has called for a federal investigation into whether Planned Parenthood illegally provided human fetal tissue to universities for research.

Rubio (R-Fla.) alleged in a letter sent Tuesday that the organization is suspected of providing tissue from aborted fetuses to the University of California, San Diego.

“Not only did Planned Parenthood provide tissue from aborted fetuses in exchange for ‘valuable consideration,’ but emails between the groups show that Planned Parenthood [the University of California San Diego] We collaborated actively and met regularly to discuss the progress of the study,” the Florida senator said.

Documents released by the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress say Pacific Southwest Family Planning provided the university with human fetal tissue taken from aborted fetuses in exchange for rights to research results.

Rubio argued that participating in transfers in exchange for money is illegal and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

“The relationship between Planned Parenthood and UCSD appears to be much more than just a contract,” he wrote in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Additionally, the Republican senator revealed that the University of Pittsburgh is currently under investigation for similar crimes.
