Sen. Tim Scott Criticizes Rep. Nancy Mace Over Airport Incident
Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina expressed his disapproval of Representative Nancy Mace, also from South Carolina, for allegedly using his name during a heated outburst at Charleston International Airport last week. Mace, who is currently running for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in South Carolina, reportedly confronted police after experiencing a delay related to a mix-up with her car’s color.
Scott mentioned in a Facebook post, “For unknown reasons, Congresswoman Nancy Mace called me names during and after the situation at Charleston International Airport.” He emphasized that he had been a frequent airport user long before entering Congress and had always found the interactions with airport staff to be positive.
He praised the Airport Police Department, stating, “The women and men of the Airport Police Department are professional, courteous, and go above and beyond the call of duty.” According to an incident report, Mace became “very enraged” while being escorted to her gate, reportedly lashing out at two police officers, using loud and profane language.
In an intense moment, Mace allegedly told an airport officer, “Tim Scott wouldn’t have treated me this bad.” While she later acknowledged the airport police for providing additional security due to “death threats” she’s received, she maintained that her conduct was appropriate. “I will follow their instructions, do what they ask, and respect the many responsibilities these police officers must balance,” she noted.
Scott criticized Mace further, stating, “It is never acceptable to criticize police officers, airport workers, TSA agents who are simply doing their jobs.” He stressed that lawmakers should uphold a standard of respect when interacting with both constituents and service workers. “For those who wish to call me by name, please respectfully note my actions and how I treat police officers, TSA employees, and other travelers with the respect they deserve,” he remarked.
Mace’s campaign responded to Scott’s comments, suggesting a lack of awareness about women’s safety, given his past personal safety issues. An adviser, Claire Considine, said in a statement, “I think it’s very meaningful for someone who has six pieces of personal safety information to comment on women’s safety.” Following the airport incident, Mace indicated that her legal team was evaluating potential actions to take.
In an attempt to refute the accusations, Mace shared video footage on social media, claiming it illustrated her walking “professionally and respectfully” through the airport. “There was no inappropriate behavior whatsoever,” she stated, labeling the reports surrounding the incident as “fake.”
