Sen. Tom Cotton Responds to Columbus Day Remarks
Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas took to the occasion of Columbus Day to criticize statements suggesting that the United States is built on “stolen land.” He specifically called out his Democratic colleagues, who urged reflection on the suffering of Native Americans.
In a statement to Breitbart News, Cotton remarked, “The Democrats’ disdain for Christopher Columbus highlights their deep-seated animosity towards Western civilization.” He asserted that Columbus, a courageous Italian explorer, is indeed a hero.
Furthermore, he provocatively suggested that those who view the land as “stolen” are free to leave it.
On the other side, Representative Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts recognized “Indigenous Peoples Day” instead of Columbus Day, a day not federally acknowledged. She accused Republicans of attempting to distort American history.
Pressley stated, “We are all on stolen land.” She emphasized that while Republicans work to sanitize the nation’s past, acknowledgment of the trauma inflicted on indigenous peoples is critical. She continued to pledge support for Indigenous voices and their contributions while aiming for a fairer future.
Representative Pramila Jayapal from Washington echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of understanding the historical and cultural significance of indigenous tribes while reflecting on the harms they have faced in the U.S.
Indigenous Peoples Day is intentionally coinciding with Columbus Day, marking the anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the Americas. This observance was officially recognized by former President Joe Biden.
Previously, President Donald Trump vowed to restore the prominence of Columbus Day after what he viewed as attempts by Democrats to replace it. He declared a commitment to reclaim Columbus’s legacy against those he perceives are attempting to tarnish it.
