R-Ala Sen. Tommy Tuberville opposed Democrats who blocked women and girls in the Sports Act last week.
Tuberville introduced the bill to the Senate for the second time after not passing it in 2023, but Democrat minority filibuster watched the bill with just 45 votes. The majority of the 51 Republicans voted to pass it, but that wasn't enough.
In an interview with Outkick on “Hot Mic,” Tuberville argued that Democrats voted against the bill because they “hate the country.”
“It's hatred not just for President Trump, but for our country,” Tuberville responded when asked whether he voted against the bill out of pure opposition and hatred towards President Donald Trump.
“They hate constitutional republics, they hate the opportunity to do what people want to do, they hate freedom of speech, and once again, President Trump has overturned everything. [Democrats] It's humiliating to see these people crush the Democrats absolutely while standing.

On February 5, President Trump signed an executive order calling for all agencies that receive federal funds to keep trans athletes out of women and women's sports, but so far, several states have ignored the order. The Tuberville bill sets a tougher precedent and helped to codify Trump's orders more permanently.

Conservative activist Riley Gaines has vowed to help fire all lawmakers who voted against the protection of women and girls in the sports law through mid-2026. Gaines claims he spoke to a Democrat senator who agrees that biological men should not compete in female and girl sports but will not side with the GOP on the issue.
“In some of these private, secret conversations I had with a few democratic senators, they know that it's absurd for men to play women's sports, and that they wouldn't want their daughters to do that. But they're hiding behind many different excuses,” Gaines said. Talking to Fox News Digital.

Other democratic senators have made various excuses to oppose the bill, from assessing the protection of trans rights to not viewing issues as merely important priorities.

During his speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, Trump reaffirmed his intention to punish states that continue to allow trans-athletes to compete with the girls.

“The president has pledged to ensure that the state is liable if it continues to allow women's sports men, which he considers to be a terrible violation of the taxpayer's dollars.
“This is a common sense policy. 80% of Americans, including over 60% of Democrats, don't want men in women's sports.”
