Senate confirms Marty Makary to lead FDA

The Senate confirmed on Tuesday night that Marty McCurry is the Director of the Food and Drug Administration.

McCurry was easily confirmed with a 56-44 vote and welcomed three Democrats.

Democrat Senators Dick Durbin (Illinois) Maggie Hassan (NH) and Jeanne Shaheen (NH) voted to confirm McCurry along with all Republicans.

McCurry, a surgeon at Johns Hopkins, takes over an agency that was hampered by the workforce cuts imposed by Elon Musk's government efficiency.

He also needs to navigate politically challenging decisions regarding access to abortion drug Mifepristone, a skeptic for the prominent vaccine, Health and Human Services Secretary of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Democrats have thwarted McCurry to cut down on FDA staff and forced him plans to exercise his authority over Mifepristone at a confirmation hearing on the FDA administration.

The GOP Senator urged him to curb access, but Democrats urged him to maintain current policies.

McCurry stomps his reaction carefully, saying he has no preconceived notions about drugs and “working hard on the data” and about Mifepristone's safety.

McCurry is a critic of the federal Covid-19 mitigation policy and frequently appeared in Fox News during the pandemic.

McCurry primarily said at the hearing that he supported the benefits of the vaccine, even if he was being pressed for cancelling the agency's advisory panel recently.

“I believe that vaccines are life-saving and children who die from vaccine-preventable diseases are a modern tragedy,” he said.
