Senate Democrat advises Trump to keep his distance from Portland following troop deployment

Trump Administration Deploys National Guard Amid Rising Tensions in Portland

On Tuesday, Senator Jeff Merkley discussed the Trump administration’s decision to deploy the National Guard to several cities, including Portland, Oregon. Following President Trump’s controversial actions, tensions appear to be escalating.

Merkley pointed out that Portland has been grappling with high crime rates, leading it to rank among the top cities for homicides—a situation that has improved, with murder rates cut in half and violent assaults down by 20%. Speaking to CNN’s John Berman, he emphasized, “Portland is recovering… businesses are returning to downtown.” He noted that this recovery follows the civil unrest experienced during the riots in 2020, suggesting that Trump’s administration had sparked a lot of that disruption.

Trump, frequently criticized in Portland, reaffirmed his commitment over the weekend to use military force to restore order, stating he would “provide all the military necessary” to protect the city. He accused protesters of laying siege to the local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office.

In response, Merkley commented that Trump’s troop deployment aims to create fear and chaos, potentially leading to violent confrontations. He cautioned against falling prey to these tactics, arguing, “Let’s not take the bait.” He shared his views on Social Platform X.

Moreover, Trump has threatened similar actions in Chicago, establishing a contentious relationship with local leaders. In Louisiana, Governor Jeff Landry has also called for the National Guard’s help in addressing crime in major cities, emphasizing progress but acknowledging there’s more work to be done.

In a speech to military officials, Trump compared American cities to a “training ground” for soldiers, declaring the internal conflicts as a form of warfare. “These are very dangerous places… and we’re trying to straighten them one by one,” he said.

In light of these developments, both Oregon and Portland have initiated legal action against the Trump administration to halt the deployment of National Guard forces.
