Sen. Whitehouse Criticizes Emil Bove’s Confirmation
On Tuesday, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse expressed strong disapproval of Emil Bove’s confirmation as a judge for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. This came after multiple whistleblowers raised concerns about Bove’s past actions.
“This is a really bad guy,” Whitehouse stated during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Briefing.” He elaborated, noting that Bove spent just six months in the Justice Department but was involved in three significant instances of prosecutor misconduct. “Most prosecutors go their entire careers without anything like that,” he remarked to host Jen Psaki.
Recently, Bove has been the focus of three complaints. Two of these cases involved encouraging violations of court orders, while others pointed to misleading Congress regarding bribery allegations against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
“This is a major issue that undermines fundamental principles of justice. It feels like a sham investigation aimed at public officials,” Whitehouse added, voicing his concerns about Bove’s handling of sensitive files related to Jeffrey Epstein during his time in charge.
Many of Whitehouse’s fellow Democrats were equally outraged by Bove’s confirmation, which passed mostly along party lines. Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski from Alaska and Susan Collins from Maine voted against it.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer voiced his thoughts on the Senate floor following the vote. “They confirmed him solely because Bove is loyal to Donald Trump, as Trump wants him on the bench. It’s that straightforward,” he said.
Before the vote, Senator Adam Schiff took to social media to criticize the fast-tracking of Bove’s confirmation, suggesting it was an attempt to downplay the allegations against him. He pointed out that the Republicans ignored whistleblower warnings regarding court orders. “It was clear he lied to the Judiciary Committee, and despite the risks he poses to the rule of law, the corruption of the bench continues,” Schiff posted.
Additionally, over 900 former Department of Justice lawyers urged the Senate to reject Bove’s lifetime judicial appointment.
