Senate Democrat on Tillis stepping down: 'We are moving towards a strongman government'

Senator Critiques GOP’s Direction Amid Domestic Policy Vote

On Monday, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) expressed that colleague Tom Tillis (R-NC) should serve as a warning about the current state of American politics and the Republican Party after Tillis opted to delay former President Trump’s major domestic policy initiative.

“It’s something that really deserves attention. We’re sliding towards a strong nation, yet we have this quiet Republican caucus while the president pushes forward with these questionable policies. It’s harmful to America, and it’s going to affect future generations,” he remarked during an interview with CNN’s Sarah Sidner. “The situation is dangerous because it undermines our checks and balances. We’re in a deeper conflict here.”

Oregon’s Democrats echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’re letting the government operate unchecked, which primarily benefits the powerful. America is losing its constitutional framework, jeopardizing the separation of powers.”

During a pivotal procedural vote on Saturday, Tillis broke ranks with GOP leaders, opposing Trump’s significant tax and spending initiatives. He criticized fellow Senate Republicans for hurrying the legislation to meet Trump’s July 4th deadline without considering its ramifications for their constituents.

“What will you say to 663,000 people in just a couple of years? President Trump will likely turn them away from Medicaid and break promises because funding will dry up,” Tillis cautioned in a speech on the Senate floor Sunday. “This bill, in its current form, is bound to betray the very commitments Donald J. Trump made in his office.”

Tillis, who has served in the Senate since 2015, condemned Trump for the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” The president has threatened to back contenders against Tillis in next year’s election, yet Tillis announced he wouldn’t seek a third term.

Merkley commended Tillis for standing up to the president and his supporters, despite the risks to his political future.

“This bill is a loss for families, while billionaires profit,” Merkley said. “It’s striking, and we’re accumulating enormous debt. This compromises not just future generations, but also the children to come, all to finance tax cuts for the wealthy amid this ballooning debt.”
