Senate Democrats Challenge DHS Funding After Shooting Incident

Outrage has erupted over a recent shooting related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota, prompting Senate Democrats to consider cutting funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With the government funding deadline looming, Democrats are quickly rallying support for potentially defunding key government agencies.

Initially hesitant to back a DHS funding bill that includes ICE, Senate Democrats had managed to reach a fragile agreement with Republicans by adding some restrictions on how DHS and ICE could operate. However, that support crumbled over the weekend when Alex Pretti, 37, was killed during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Following this tragedy, Senate Democrats wasted no time in denouncing the DHS bill.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that the current version of the DHS funding bill would not pass, citing Republicans’ awareness of the distressing footage showing ICE’s actions in Minnesota. He emphasized that in light of the tragic events, including the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, there is a pressing need for Congress to reform ICE for the safety of the public.

Schumer further noted that while the DHS bill is being rewritten, there are other funding measures that could still proceed, appealing to the shared interests of the American people. A caucus-wide meeting among Senate Democrats took place to discuss the potential veto of the DHS bill unless reforms are enacted. A broader funding package could be presented for a vote soon, likely before Thursday.

Democrats believe that eliminating DHS from the package is essential. However, Senate Republicans are resisting any alterations, as funding for DHS is a top priority and time is running short with the impending funding deadline.

This disagreement adds more layers to the complexity of the situation for Senate Democrats, as any adjustments would also require House approval, which isn’t realistic given the House’s current schedule. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune will likely take on the task of addressing the funding crisis.

Some Senate Republicans have called for a comprehensive investigation into the shooting, though they have not suggested withholding funding from DHS. Generally, Republican leadership is not eager to cave to Democrats’ requests, especially since the DHS bill was reached through bipartisan negotiations.

A Senate Republican aide underscored their intention to avoid another government shutdown, asserting a commitment to advance as planned and expressing hope that Democrats will collaborate on a solution.
