Senate Republicans Block Democrats’ War Powers Resolution
Senate Republicans again did not challenge the Democrats’ attempt to limit President Trump’s military authority regarding Iran. The push for a vote on the War Powers Resolution aimed at restricting Trump’s powers was blocked by Republicans. This incident follows closely on the heels of Democrats invoking the resolution to demand accountability from the Trump administration about the ongoing conflicts.
In this latest attempt, Senator Chris Murphy’s resolution faced a predominantly party-line vote. The only exception was Senator Rand Paul, who sided with the Democrats in supporting the bill. This effort aligns with the broader strategy by Senate Democrats to compel Army Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to testify publicly. Earlier in the month, they outlined plans for voting on five different war powers resolutions.
Murphy expressed determination, stating, “We’re not going to silence the Senate until we at least make that commitment.” He seems to doubt the administration’s ability to justify the war. However, it’s unclear whether Hegseth and Rubio will be called to testify, as the leaders of the relevant committees have not made any moves to invite them.
This latest effort to limit Trump’s military powers emerges amid significant fluctuations in the administration’s approach to Iran. Over the weekend, Trump indicated a willingness to “attack and destroy” Iranian power plants unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened. Yet, he reversed course on Monday, claiming that constructive dialogue had taken place between the U.S. and Iran, a statement Tehran has dismissed.
Meanwhile, Congress is waiting on an additional funding package, which may balloon into the hundreds of billions of dollars. Some Republican lawmakers are considering merging this funding with other proposals, potentially reaching around $200 billion. This could complicate negotiations, especially as it intersects with funding for agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement and initiatives related to voter eligibility.
Senator Tim Kaine remarked on the enormity of proposed figures and emphasized Democrats’ readiness to address war powers. He has been vocal about pressing for a vote on the War Powers Resolution, frequently checking in with his colleagues to gauge their perspectives on the situation.
