Senate Democrats recently withdrew their support for the initial bill aimed at regulating stubcoins. On Tuesday, they unveiled plans for a new proposal designed to prohibit federal officials and their families from engaging in digital asset transactions.
Senator Jeff Markley (D-OR), who presented the bill on the Senate floor, stated, “Anyone seeking to gain influence with the president can easily enrich him by buying cryptocurrencies he owns or manages. This is a significant corruption issue. It jeopardizes our national security and undermines public trust in our government. We need to address this corruption swiftly.”
The revised legislation comes as a response to unease within the Democratic Party that the earlier law fell short in preventing corruption, despite previously garnering substantial bipartisan backing. The Senate Banking Committee had approved the original bill in March with bipartisan support. However, two recent events have prompted Democrats to reevaluate their approach. First, a report from the New York Times indicated that the Trump family could potentially gain $2 billion from a stubcoin agreement with a Dubai investment firm within the existing regulatory framework. Secondly, Trump announced a competition in April, where the top holder of a memecoin could win a private dinner with him, giving the top 25 memecoin owners the chance for a guided tour of the White House. According to Chainalysis, the official publisher of Meme Coin linked to Trump has earned $320 million from trading fees related to the contest alone.
Senate Democrats have acknowledged their limited ability to curb the president’s actions, citing a lack of legal means. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans have also voiced their doubts regarding Trump’s contest. Notably, Senator Cynthia Ramis from Wyoming, a Trump ally, has expressed willingness to collaborate with Democrats on initiatives to regulate lawmakers holding digital assets. She told NBC, “Even the conversation around meme coins is legal; we need to create a regulatory framework to clarify this issue, preventing a Wild West scenario.”
