Democratic senators plan to hold leadership elections to fill the top posts in Congress within two months after Republicans lose their Senate majority in the 2024 elections.
The election is scheduled to be held at the Capitol on Tuesday morning and will focus on who will fill the No. 3 position, which was previously held by a retiring longtime lawmaker.
In last month's election, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D.N.Y.) lost his longtime position as Senate majority leader. But it would be a demotion for Schumer, who will assume the Senate minority leader's post in 2025.
Majority Whip Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is also expected to remain a minority member and the No. 2 House Democrat, a position he has held for nearly 20 years.

However, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), the No. 3 ranking Democrat, is not seeking re-election this term and remains chair of the Policy and Communications Committee.

Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Cory Booker, R-Johnson, were reportedly both vying for the No. 3 spot in the chamber. However, Axios reported Monday that the Minnesota Democratic Party is set to fill the coveted leadership position.
Ahead of the leadership election, Axios reported that Booker will reportedly take the No. 4 post in the Senate, but it's unclear what that means.
