Senate Democrats Release LGBTQ Staff Demographics
Recent survey data from Senate Democrats reveals that the Energy Committee has the highest percentage of LGBTQ staff members among their ranks.
Approximately 22% of the Democratic staff on the Senate Energy Committee identify as LGBTQ. This survey, part of the Diversity Initiative started in 2017, encourages participation across various offices. The initiative aims to mirror the country’s diversity, as mentioned on their website.
Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, stated, “Senate Democrats will continue to advance because the more inclusive our Hall of Power becomes, the more capable and representative our democracy will be.” He emphasized that diversity strengthens the nation, suggesting progress has been made but acknowledging there’s still work to do.
The survey indicates consistent LGBTQ representation on the Energy Committee, with a noticeable increase in staff since 2024. Meanwhile, the Aging Committee follows closely behind with 20% of its staff identifying as LGBTQ, and the Agriculture and Commerce Committee has about 18%.
Interestingly, the demographics show that Senator Gary Peters from Michigan leads with 31% LGBTQ staff, while Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania has 28%. Notably, Senate Republicans have yet to publish similar demographic information about their staffs.
As of February, Gallup reported that about 9.3% of Americans identify as LGBTQ, a significant increase from just 3.5% in 2012.
