Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) appeared to dismiss concerns about former President Trump’s mental acuity, instead pointing to heightened scrutiny of his mental sanity and ability to serve a second term. The spotlight was on President Biden.
CBS News’ “Face the Nation” anchor Margaret Brennan took issue with President Trump’s comments over the weekend about confusing former Presidents Obama and Biden and suggesting that U.S. troops were stationed in Ukraine. I brought up the mix-up.
Asked if he was relieved about President Trump’s mental health, Sullivan said, “Yes, I am. Compared to the current president? 110 percent. And as your polls show, the American people are seriously worried. I think you have some concerns. [about] Where does President Biden stand in terms of his suitability for the presidency, especially his mental acuity? ”
“When you compare it to President Biden and former President Trump, I don’t think it’s a close call when you see both of them in action,” he continued.
It’s not the first time Trump has confused the names of Obama and Biden, with a hint in November that “other people” may have “extraordinary influence over the operations” of the United States. He sarcastically claimed that he had done so before.
Both Trump and Biden have come under fire for gaffes in recent months. Trump is 77 years old, four years younger than Biden. However, the current president has come under intense criticism, especially in the wake of last month’s special counsel’s report, which cast doubt on the president’s safety.
At 81 years old, Biden is the oldest sitting U.S. president, and if re-elected, he will be 86 years old at the end of his second term. Last week, he pushed aside his concerns about his age, saying what really matters to him is “how old my ideas are.”
“Look at the other guy, he’s about my age,” Biden said last week on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” in reference to President Trump’s recent comments. , I can’t remember my wife’s name.” The speech appeared to confuse his wife, Melania Trump, with Mercedes Schlapp, a former Trump aide and wife of American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp.
