Senate passes funding for DHS, but with a condition

Senate Takes Action on DHS Funding After Lengthy Standoff

After a prolonged 42-day deadlock, the Senate has finally allocated some funding to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), but there’s a condition involved.

It’s been over six weeks since the DHS was first shut down back in mid-February. On Friday morning, the Senate reached an agreement to fund critical agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Coast Guard, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and notably, the Transportation Security Administration. While it’s about time this funding was approved, the Senate is still withholding finances for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection.

Senate Minority Leader John Thune expressed disappointment, stating that the extra funding is “unfortunate” and will likely exacerbate ongoing disagreements over policies, particularly those that Democrats seem to be focused on.

“Democrats wanted reform,” Thune remarked. “We tried to collaborate on that, but ultimately, they didn’t achieve any reforms. We’ll have to tackle those issues another time.”

The funding bill was passed via voice vote around 2 a.m. ET, and the Senate is now on a two-week recess. The spending package will soon be introduced to the House of Representatives.

Shortly before this decision, President Donald Trump instructed new DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to “immediately pay TSA employees.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump conveyed, “Democrats have irresponsibly created a true national crisis, and I will, as always, exercise my powers to protect our great country!” He emphasized that he would issue an order for Secretary Mullin to promptly ensure that TSA officers are compensated to address the situation and mitigate disruptions at airports.

Trump added, “While it won’t be easy, we’ll manage! A special thanks to the hardworking TSA officers and the tremendous support they’ve provided at airports. I won’t permit radical left-wing Democrats to hold our nation hostage.”
