Senate Honors Victims of Annunciation Church Shooting
The Senate recently passed a resolution to honor the victims and survivors of the tragic shooting at Annunciation Church. On Monday, lawmakers voted unanimously on the resolution introduced by Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith.
This resolution condemns the violent act that took place in Minneapolis, pays tribute to those who lost their lives, and acknowledges the bravery of first responders, caregivers, and community members who stepped up during the crisis.
In the aftermath, Klobuchar emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation to drive meaningful change. She shared a compelling thought: “It’s just gonna take the courage of those little sixth-graders that laid on top of first-graders or the teacher that took the kid with disabilities out of the wheelchair and laid on top of him. That’s real courage; we just have to have a little political courage to get this done.”
The shooting last month led to the loss of two children and left 23 others injured when the gunman opened fire during morning Mass through the church’s stained-glass windows.
The family of 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel expressed a desire for him to be remembered for who he was rather than by the tragic circumstances of his death. Fletcher’s father, in a poignant remark, urged people to cherish their loved ones a bit more in the wake of this loss.
Meanwhile, the family of 10-year-old Harper Moyski hopes to celebrate her life as “a bright, joyful, and deeply loved 10-year-old whose laughter, kindness, and spirit touched everyone who knew her.”
Authorities are investigating the attack as a potential hate crime aimed at Catholics, with 23-year-old Robin Westman, who altered his name from “Robert” in 2020, identified as the shooter.
