Senate Republican leader Thune says Republicans won’t sit back as Democrats take control of Congress.

After Republicans suffered major losses at the ballot box, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said his party would work with President Donald Trump to oppose what he called “Democrat extremism.”

Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, leaving Republicans in the minority in the House and Senate when the 120th Congress convenes early next year.

Thune argued that Senate Republicans had a strong record over the past two years, citing efforts on taxes, border security, Cabinet confirmations and judicial appointments. He said the party had achieved those results despite Democratic opposition, and that he was proud of its work.

Looking ahead to 2027, Thune said Republicans would not simply let Democrats undo those policies. With Trump still in the White House, he said, the Senate GOP would work with the president to resist proposals he described as far-left and keep them from becoming mainstream.

Results in close Senate races in Mississippi and Alaska were still unsettled. Based on the results available so far, Republicans appeared likely to hold 44 seats in the next Congress.
