Senator Collins Announces Run for Reelection as Midterm Competition Intensifies

Sen. Susan Collins to Run for Re-election

Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine), aged 73, has declared her intention to seek re-election this November as midterm elections approach. She shared the news in a video posted on social media.

In the clip, she amusingly unboxed a pair of new athletic shoes with a note saying, “These are perfect for 2026 because you’ll be running,” hinting at her campaign.

Collins stands out as the sole Republican in a predominantly blue state and is expected to face challenges from either Governor Janet Mills (D-Maine) or progressive candidate Graham Platner.

The Democratic Party, aiming to unseat Collins, has described this election as pivotal, potentially influencing the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, according to reports.

While many mainstream Democrats back Mills, Platner has been drawing attention for his outsider status and focus on economic equality. However, his campaign has encountered issues, including scrutiny over past social media posts and a tattoo that has raised eyebrows.

Collins first took office in the Senate in 1996, and she has been re-elected multiple times since, in 2002, 2008, 2014, and 2020.

Collins is regarded nationally as a lawmaker who fosters bipartisan cooperation to address issues and achieve results for both Maine residents and the broader American public. She has consistently been ranked highly for her bipartisanship.

During her tenure, Collins has collaborated with senators from both parties to pass significant legislation that enhances the lives of Americans in various critical sectors such as health care, the economy, and national defense.

In October, Scott Pressler from Early Vote Action discussed the need for increased Republican voter turnout in the upcoming elections, noting the trend of lower voter participation in midterm years.

He emphasized his group’s efforts to revitalize the Republican Party, stating that even after a potential major victory for Trump, the work would need to be ongoing.

The Senate Leadership Fund’s Executive Director, Alex Latcham, expressed strong support for Collins, declaring her among the most qualified senators due to her extensive service and commitment to Maine. Latcham confirmed that they are dedicated to ensuring her re-election campaign is successful.
