Senator Mike Lee Introduces Three Bills to Remove the U.S.

NATO Withdrawal Proposal by Senator Mike Lee

During a recent NATO summit, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) proposed a method that could push U.S. allies to exit the alliance, suggesting they should rely on European funding instead of American taxpayers. “The U.S. withdrawal from NATO has been pending for quite some time,” Lee mentioned on Wednesday. “NATO’s threats, which were relevant when it started 76 years ago, have diminished. If Europe believes in the alliance, they should contribute fairly rather than leaving the financial burden solely on American citizens.”

Lee introduced new legislation titled, It is not a trustworthy organization (NATO) law. This bill would direct the President to formally inform NATO of the U.S. intent to withdraw as stipulated under Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty, meet Congressional approval requirements, and prevent U.S. taxpayer dollars from being used for NATO’s common budget, including both civilian and military initiatives. “It’s time to leave NATO,” he asserted, sharing this sentiment on X.

In addition, the Senator presented two related bills aimed at transparency regarding burden-sharing among allies. These proposals, Alliance’s burden sharing reporting method and NATO’s burden sharing reporting method, would aim to identify which nations fail to meet their defense spending commitments. The legislation mandates the Department of Defense to compile an annual report on the military preparations and spending of each member, along with their contributions to Ukraine and reliance on U.S. military assets.

“Every year, our so-called allies avoid their obligations while contributing to conflicts in their regions,” Lee remarked. “By implementing this annual reporting, my law will pinpoint those allies falling short in their contributions, promoting accountability.”

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who supports the bill, spoke candidly about America’s role within NATO. He noted, “Our allies expect the U.S. to be both their benefactor and enforcer, while they sit back. President Trump had a point; it’s high time they step up.”

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) echoed these worries, showing her support for the bill. Lee pointed out that despite NATO’s reaffirmation of the 2% defense spending goal at last year’s Washington summit, about a third of member countries still lag behind their commitments. “America has long taken on the burden for those not contributing,” Lee indicated on X.
