Texas Senate Race Heats Up
Senator John Cornyn of Texas is preparing for a tough battle as he seeks a fifth term in 2026. He has outpaced his main opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, with a $1 million increase in his latest fundraising efforts. Recent analysis shows that while funding has dipped for other Republican incumbents, Cornyn’s campaign is actively trying to close the gap in voter support against Paxton.
In an impressive fundraising move, Cornyn has brought in $3.9 million over the past quarter, totaling approximately $9 million in resources. A supporting Super PAC has also contributed around $11 million during this time.
This primary showdown is shaping up to be one of the priciest of the midterm races. Although Cornyn is viewed as a more viable candidate for the general election, current polling suggests Republican voters may pose a challenge for him as he tries to advance from key state contests.
Interestingly, Paxton appears to perform better than Cornyn in hypothetical matchups against the Democratic candidate, according to a private survey by a veteran GOP pollster.
Support from former President Trump could play a crucial role, with both candidates vying for his endorsement. Trump’s team seems to be monitoring the situation closely to determine how they can influence voter preferences before any endorsements are made.
As Cornyn builds his campaign’s financial resources, he hopes to overcome the prevailing voter sentiments against him. His fundraising strategy is partly focused on addressing Paxton’s reputation, with negative ads highlighting “recurring mismanagement” and “ethical failures” attributed to Paxton, as stated by Cornyn’s campaign manager, Andy Hemming.
The Cornyn campaign is highlighting almost complete alignment with Republican values as he has supported the president 99.2% of the time. Hemming mentioned that it’s no surprise that they report strong fundraising numbers for the second quarter of 2025, considering Cornyn’s effectiveness in the Senate and his alignment with Trump.
Paxton’s campaign has reported less fundraising in the latest quarter, but they called the amount “historic” for challengers. They assert that the grassroots movement to unseat Cornyn is gaining momentum.
The Republican primary field is still in flux, with Texas Representative Wesley Hunt reportedly considering entering the Senate race.
