Warren Criticizes Amazon’s MGM Investment as “Blatant Bribery”
Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, has accused Amazon’s investment in MGM Studios of being a clear case of bribery. This comes despite significant media funding for projects under President Obama, which has sparked some discussion regarding its implications.
Last year, MGM acquired a documentary focusing on the First Lady’s journey for $40 million. Additionally, the studio put in another $35 million for its promotion.
Warren has faced scrutiny in the past for inaccurately claiming Native American ancestry during her time as a Harvard Law professor, and she has criticized MGM for what she described as an unfair compensation arrangement with the Trump administration.
Warren questioned the legitimacy of Amazon’s financial commitment, stating, “If this transaction really was above board and competitive, why did they pay three times more than the next highest bidder?” Her key argument suggests that Amazon might be attempting to curry favor with the president by investing heavily in projects that benefit the Trump family. “This certainly looks like bribery,” she added, urging Congress and the public for answers.
Her concerns were echoed by Representative Hank Johnson from Georgia. A few years back, Johnson humorously worried about the effects of an influx of visitors to Guam potentially tipping the island over.
Johnson also expressed his concerns: “Amazon’s inflated payments for producing and promoting the film raise questions regarding federal anti-bribery laws. It’s crucial for Americans to ensure corporations aren’t misusing funds to gain political influence or special treatment.” Both Warren and Johnson are pushing for Amazon to clarify its investment in this documentary.
On the other hand, MGM has rejected these claims. The studio released a statement asserting, “We don’t agree with the suggestion that Amazon’s decision to license this film was inappropriate. We regularly produce documentaries offering unique cultural and historical perspectives that go beyond politics.”
The company emphasized that Amazon MGM Studios became the film’s licensor after a thorough competitive bidding process, stating that “Melania” provides exclusive insights into a significant presidential transition from the First Lady’s viewpoint, allowing a unique story to be told. The choice to license the film was based on its content and cultural importance.
MGM also highlighted that their decision was motivated by a belief that their audience would genuinely enjoy the film, which debuted as the top movie on Amazon Prime in March. After a successful theater run in late January, “Melania” became a notable box-office success for documentaries in over ten years before moving to Amazon Prime.
