Senator's comparison of Padilla to John Lewis causes swift backlash

Democrat Senator Sheldon Whitehouse encountered backlash on Thursday after a social media post likened the reactions of certain Democratic colleagues at a press conference to the late civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis.

Specifically, Senator Alex Padilla of California shared images of the event alongside historical photos of Lewis, who was famously handcuffed by law enforcement during a civil rights protest. This particular incident occurred at a press conference with Los Angeles Homeland Security Secretary Christa Noem amidst ongoing protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in South Carolina.

Lewis, a significant figure of the civil rights movement, faced arrests more than 40 times while advocating for equality, notably participating in impactful events like the March on Washington and the Selma marches in Alabama. Many, including GOP Representative Burgess Owens, who has his roots in the Jim Crow South, took umbrage with these comparisons.

Owens told reporters that, having experienced segregation firsthand, he deemed the analogy offensive and inappropriate, calling it a “political stunt” that trivializes the sacrifices made during the civil rights movement.

Criticism from conservative circles was swift. Whitehouse Principal Harrison Fields expressed disbelief over the post, questioning the senator’s sanity in making such a comparison. Fox News host Lawrence Jones similarly reacted with shock on social media.

Amid rising tensions around immigration, Padilla’s removal from the press conference sparked further debate. Reports indicated he was forcibly taken down and handcuffed by agents, an action that quickly drew attention from fellow lawmakers, with videos circulating of them observing the scene unfold.

In response to Padilla’s treatment, Democrats across the board condemned the level of force used and protested by visiting the offices of both House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator John Tune. Some called for Noem’s resignation over the incident.

Senator Adam Schiff from California stated that Noem shouldn’t have been in her position and called for an investigation into the officers’ actions. Other lawmakers were divided, with some questioning the legality of the actions taken against Padilla.

Senator Bernie Moreno raised irony regarding the Democrats’ previous comments about law enforcement in light of recent high-profile investigations.
