Incident at Homeland Security Press Conference Involving Senator Padilla
Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif) attempted to interrupt a press conference led by Homeland Security Secretary Chris Noem in Los Angeles on Thursday, but things didn’t go as planned.
A video shared by Fox News reporter Bill Melugin depicted Padilla crashing the press event and momentarily disrupting Noem’s speech.
“He was in the federal wing to receive a briefing with General Gilotte, listening to Chief Noem’s press conference,” a source noted.
Security personnel acted swiftly. Just as they began to escort him out, Padilla introduced himself, saying, “I’m Senator Alex Padilla. I have a question for my secretary.”
Despite multiple security guards trying to remove him, Padilla attempted to argue his point. As he was being taken out, he shouted, “Hands Off!”
A video showed Padilla being forcibly handled by security. Melugin reported that shortly after his recording stopped, Padilla was taken down by FBI officials and briefly detained.
In response, Padilla’s Democratic colleagues rallied to defend him. California Governor Gavin Newsom described the incident as “outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful,” asserting Padilla’s character as one of decency amid what he called “Trump and his shocking army” being “out of control.”
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) expressed his disgust, saying the footage of Padilla’s removal “made my stomach sick” and demanded an explanation for the incident.
Representative Norma Torres (D-Calif) characterized the event as “disgraceful abuse of power,” emphasizing that Padilla posed no threat and only sought to question Secretary Noem.
Padilla’s office clarified that he was in Los Angeles to oversee Congressional activities and was intended to participate in the press conference. However, contrary to this claim, another video showed Padilla approaching the front where Noem was speaking before security intervened.
According to Melugin, Noem later shared that she and Padilla had a brief meeting and exchanged phone numbers, describing their interaction as “sincere and helpful.” Noem expressed concern over Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and mentioned that they hoped to keep lines of communication open.
