The Senegalese government has set a new date for the postponed presidential election for March 24, according to an official statement released after Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.

President Macky Sall, who is facing term limits at the end of his second term, announced in early February that he would postpone the election by 10 months, weeks before the election was scheduled for February 25.
However, Senegal’s highest electoral authority, the Constitutional Council, rejected the move and ordered the government to set a new election date as soon as possible.

“The President of the Republic has informed the Council of Ministers that the date for the presidential elections will be set for Sunday, March 24, 2024,” government spokesperson Abdu Karim Fofana said in a statement. “The President of the Republic also notified the Prime Minister and his Cabinet of the formation of a new government.”
