Reports from Iranian state media indicate that Ali Shamhani, the former Chief National Security Council Director in Iran, was killed during an Israeli airstrike on Friday. Shamhani was a leading advisor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and the strike reportedly targeted him at his home in Tehran.
This incident represents a significant blow to Iranian military leadership by Israel.
Mike Pompeo has remarked that Israel’s actions are justified and beneficial for the global community.
Shamhani’s military career began as the commander of ground forces in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), where he served for decades. The IRGC is a powerful component of Iran’s military structure, created following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, evolving from a domestic security role to a significant international military force, supporting allies across the Middle East, including in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq.
Lisa Daftali, an expert on Iran, explained to Fox News Digital that Shamhani’s removal indicates a strategic attempt to destabilize the Iranian regime from within. This particular strike suggests not just a focus on nuclear threats but also a deep challenge to the power dynamics in Tehran. Shamhani’s close ties to Khamenei give this strike added weight and could incite fear among the political elite.
She also noted that this action creates a dangerous precedent, exemplifying that no one in the Iranian leadership is beyond reach.
Shamhani had a notable military role, having been appointed commander of the Artesh Navy by Khamenei in 1989, where he was tasked with rebuilding naval capabilities after significant losses in the Iran-Iraq War. The US Navy notably achieved a major victory in Operation Mantis in 1988, significantly reducing Iran’s naval presence.
Following his appointment, Iran focused on enhancing its naval strength through the procurement of patrol boats and advanced military technology, including anti-ship missiles.
Shamhani’s influence grew in the aftermath of Qassem Soleimani’s death in 2020. He sought to ensure self-sufficiency for Iranian forces, expressing the Islamic Republic’s stance against foreign military presence in the region and boasting enhanced military capabilities along the Persian Gulf.
In a rare interview about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Shamhani reflected on Iran’s strategic position after the US withdrawal from the agreement and indicated popular dissent regarding its terms.
The situation surrounding his death illustrates the complicated landscape of power and military strategy that continues to evolve within Iran’s governance.
