Aaron Leitz Resigns from Justice Department to Run for Texas Attorney General
Aaron Leitz, a top official in President Donald Trump’s Justice Department, has stepped down from his role to campaign for Texas Attorney General, describing it as “a battle for the soul of Texas.” A former Marine and Chief of Staff for Senator Ted Cruz, Leitz also held the position of attorney general for the Department of Law and Policy under Attorney General Pam Bondy.
His resignation from the DOJ occurred on Wednesday, amid speculation about his intentions. The next day, he formally kicked off his campaign. In a statement, he emphasized the stakes: “If we lose Texas, we lose the Republic.”
Leitz, noting the imperative of the moment, remarked, “This is not time for co-sick people who have not been semi-measured or tested.” He pledged to utilize “every ounce of legal firepower” as Attorney General to support Trump, combat the radical left, and prioritize the needs of everyday Texans.
There’s a noteworthy backdrop to this election, with the current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also campaigning alongside incumbent Senator John Cornyn. Leitz has voiced support for various Trump administration initiatives, focusing on border security, immigration issues, and election integrity.
On social media, Bondy lauded Leitz, stating, “We are proud to work with @aaron_reitz on @theJusticedept. Aaron played a central role in our work to make America safe again. His next chapter will certainly contribute to @Potus’ mission.” Kash Patel, an FBI director, echoed this sentiment, calling Leitz a “great American and a ruthless advocate for law and order.”
Interestingly, before his time in the Trump administration, Leitz served as Texas Deputy Attorney General, working on legal strategies for Paxton. In a past statement, Paxton praised Leitz as a leader in protecting “American values.” With the Texas Attorney General’s race shaping up to be competitive, Leitz isn’t the only Republican candidate; Senator Mays Middleton is also running, adding to the dynamics of this significant election.
