Senior woman victimized in 'unimaginable' break-in

A shocking burglary took place on Long Island, where a man allegedly broke into a home and assaulted an elderly woman who was just sitting on her couch, according to police reports from Wednesday.

Authorities in Suffolk County report that 29-year-old Jawalen Booker entered the 74-year-old victim’s apartment in Holbrook by climbing through a window early in the morning on October 24. After confronting the victim, he allegedly subjected her to a violent physical and sexual assault.

“Certain crimes really shake us to our core, making us question humanity. Unfortunately, one of those took place last Friday,” Suffolk County Police Chief Kevin Catalina stated during a press conference.

Following the horrifying incident, the attacker fled the apartment complex, but the victim found the strength to call 911 and seek help. She was subsequently rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Booker was apprehended on Tuesday after an extensive investigation by Suffolk detectives, who tracked him down to the Bronx after the assault.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine criticized Booker’s actions, calling them “unconscionable” and expressing that such behavior would not be tolerated.

“This is truly an unspeakable crime. Mr. Booker is a poor excuse for a human being,” Romaine said, reflecting both anger and disbelief.

“To the victims of this incident, I apologize on behalf of the entire Suffolk Constabulary for what you have suffered, and I commend your strength and courage,” added Police Chief Catalina.

Booker faces charges of first-degree rape and robbery and is being held at the 6th Precinct, awaiting an arraignment in Central Islip scheduled for the coming Wednesday.
