Separate boat fires in NJ, NY overnight kill 2 women, send 3 to hospital: officials

Officials said Raging swallowed boats in New Jersey and Westchester overnight in separate incidents.

Newark police said two people trapped in a burning boat in an alley near 20 Pencey Place around 8:45pm on Friday. I received a call about an adult woman.

The two women, who remained unidentified, were taken to university hospital where they were declared dead, Martin said.

According to Martin, an adult man was taken to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in stable condition after a stable flame.

The fire that erupted within three miles of Newar Liberty International Airport spread across both boats, but Martin said only one was severely damaged.

The investigation is underway.

Four hours later, a large flame broke out at the Imperial Yacht Club, a marina on Sansocchi Island in New Rochelle.

Thick spurts of smoke circulated around the area as firefighters responded to multiple calls about the flames, according to New Rochelle Fire Commissioner Andy Sandor.

They called an ambulance for her mother, who was on one of the boats, and her school-age child, Sandor said.

Both victims were taken to Jacobi Hospital, where their condition is unknown, he said.

Sandor said it took firefighters two hours to control the flames, causing a total of seven boats to be destroyed.

According to Sandor, the new Rochelle Harbormaster will work with the U.S. Coast Guard and the New York State Environmental Protection Agency to save not only fuel and other pollutants spills and ruined boats, but also abandoned boats.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
