Serena Williams’ husband gets confused for ‘umbrella holder’ at Olympics

Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, was mistaken for an “umbrella holder” by a European Olympic commentator during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday.

Williams, 42, and the Reddit co-founder decided to attend the French celebrations even though the tennis star was not competing — and heavy rain began to fall as she hit the red carpet.

Ohanian, in a display of gentlemanly manner, held an umbrella over his wife’s head, a gesture that caught the eye of the ceremony’s announcer.

“That’s the level you should aim for,” they continued. “To have someone actually hold an umbrella behind you.”

As the ceremony progressed, the Williams family, including 6-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., appeared in a separate interview with Access Hollywood’s Kit Hoover.

Williams was asked about her husband, who had previously been spotted taking photos of the tennis superstar so that she could post about her experiences on social media.

“Best investor ever, best Instagram husband ever, best husband ever,” Williams said.

Interestingly, Ohanian, whose net worth is estimated at $70 million according to Forbes in 2019, spoke about why many people don’t know about the work he does.

“More people know me for the pancakes I make than the people who created Reddit, and I’m okay with that,” Ohanian said.

Meanwhile, Williams has enjoyed a successful career, winning four Olympic gold medals.

She won one women’s singles title and three women’s doubles titles with her sister Venus Williams at the 2012 London Games.
